Klamath Siskiyou Bioregion

The Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion is very well suited to the production of seed. The hot, dry summers allow seed to develop to their full maturity without being damaged or destroyed by cool, wet climate. In areas of the country that receive significant summer precipitation, seed farmers face dangers of mold and rotting. The autumn weather in Southern Oregon tends to remain dry until November, allowing plenty of time for farmers to harvest and process seed before the rains begin and ambient moisture can reduce the quality of seed. In addition, the Klamath-Siskiyou bio-region is home to a wide range of micro-climates with different amounts of rainfall, sun exposure and soil types. This diversity of micro-climates provides seed growers with opportunities to grow many different varieties of seed. Seed production is an excellent crop for many Southern Oregon farmers because most varieties require much less irrigation in the late summer and early autumn, when water supplies are limited. In addition, seed is a relatively light-weight commodity that can be easily shipped to other parts of the country. As the Rogue Valley has a relatively low population to support small fresh-market farmers, seed growers can take advantage of national and international markets while still remaining small-scale.
