Barking Moon Farm

Farmers: Josh Cohen & Melissa Matthewson

Here is a message from Josh and Melissa from Barking Moon Farm about ordering chickens from them:

******
We have 30 roasting chickens available and will be butchering on Sunday, October 18th at the farm. We can only sell you chickens if you come to the farm for pick-up, so if you would like to order any, please let me know via email. Pick-up of the chickens will be at 4pm on Sunday, October 18th.

As well, we will be offering over 50 stew hens (best for chicken stock & soup) the next week. Those will be $4.00/#. I do believe we will be butchering those birds on Thursday, October 22nd with pick-up at 4pm as well. More details on that to follow.

Farm: A 10 acre farm, 1 acre in produce. Located in the Thompson Creek Watershed, Jackson Co, Southern Oregon.

We’ve been farming for four years at several farms (Whistling Duck Farm, Blue Fox Farm, Rattlesnake Community Farm [in Missoula] and Clark Fork Organics [in Missoula], but this will be our first year on our own land. We are working on putting together a lot of infrastructure this first year and hope to sell to multiple markets in 2008. The land used to be a cattle and hay ranch and is actually the site of an old ghost town called Bingham. The ground has not been plowed in over 30 years. We grow organically, but have not certified yet. We would like to join the Salmon Safe and Organic programs next year. We have irrigation water from Thompson Creek . We do not have interns, but would like to have them, once we set up housing for next year.

Josh and Melissa have a passion for small farm organic agriculture and want to integrate animals, vegetables, fruit and native plants into their whole farm setting. They have been farming and gardening together for seven years. They have a farm dog, forty chickens and are expecting their first child this spring.
